The English Cocker Spaniel is similar to the American one, but they have different body types, are larger and have slightly different temperaments.
They are sturdy, affectionate, energetic and lovable dogs. They are bred to be sporting dogs, so they will have plenty of stamina and independence and are a great addition to any family.
They are medium-sized dogs. They can cope with flat or apartment living. They are very playful, so as long as they get a good long daily walk and plenty of playtimes, they will be fine. A bored dog will usually become a naughty dog, whether it be nuisance barking, chewing or digging. Try to ensure they are occupied with jobs, playtime or plenty of exercise to keep them out of trouble.
They are totally devoted to your family; they are fantastic and gentle around your children, very affectionate and will always want to be with you. This breed is known to suffer from separation anxiety, so consider this if you will be leaving them on their own a lot.
They are not the greatest of watchdogs but will soon alert you to people at the door, but once inside, people will usually be treated as new friends. They just love people, so don’t expect any suitable guarding activities.
They are very intelligent but sensitive, and you will need to ensure your training revolves around fun and treats. If you scold or are forceful, it will break their little hearts, and they won’t respond well.
They are great with other dogs and will play and accept them, cats should be OK, but there might be a tendency to chase neighbourhood cats and small animals as they are bred to be sporting dogs.
They have silky coats that require weekly brushing to keep them free of mats. They shed moderately, but they need clipping by a professional every few months, or you can learn to do it yourself.
