The Australian Cattle Dog or known as a blue or red heeler (depending on colourings) is a tough, active, clever dog. They love it most when they are working or involved in family activities. They are great at competing in agility and dog sports.
They are loyal and protective over their family, they do tend to bond with one person over the entire family, this person they will stick like glue where ever they go. They do have a tendency to nip at anything that moves so, families with young children should avoid this breed.
Not a dog for a flat or apartment, they love to be outside with a job or anything high energy, jogging, chasing balls to keep them active. A bored cattle dog can become a destructive and loud dog.
They make great watchdogs and are protective over their owners, they are generally friendly but are wary and suspicious of strangers.
They are ok with other dogs, they love to chase but often will have a little nip whilst in pursuit. Cats raised with them will be normally be fine but, neighbouhood cats had better watch out
They are both intelligent and strong-willed, they will take a firm hand to become well trained dogs.
The Australian Cattle Dog’s weather-resistant outer coat is short and straight, with a thick undercoat. They shed little or year round but they blow their coat once or twice per year. Which means for around 3 weeks, there will be clumps of hair everywhere! Other than that they are easy grooming only requiring a brush once every week.
