Dog Food Free Trials
There has been an explosion of dog food trials in the UK. Once you find a brand your dog likes, you typically will stay with them for many years, and because most of them are subscription-based, you will be a great customer.
The great thing is this explosion has meant fierce competition from all the brands, meaning you can try a lot of different food for very cheap and sometimes free food to your home.
Take advantage of them all and order a box. It’s of excellent value, and if you find the perfect one, it will be delivered to your door every month. You just need to stay on top of orders and make changes to get the best value.
Pros:
- Loads of flavour choice
- Delivered to your door
- Good quality food
- Food is created around your dog’s needs
- Great discounts
Cons
- Expensive
- No way of seeing food before you buy
- You have to remember to change orders
How does a dog food trial work?
A dog food trial is a way for pet owners to test a new type or brand of dog food to see if their furry friend likes it. Doing your research before starting a trial is essential, as some dogs may be allergic to certain ingredients in their food. Once you’ve found food your pup will enjoy, purchase a small amount and offer it to them at their next mealtime. You can continue feeding them that food if they enjoy it and have no adverse reaction. However, it’s best to try something else if they don’t take to it or have an allergic reaction.
What is the cheapest way to feed your dog?
If you have the time, the cheapest way to feed your dog is to make your own food. This is because you can control the ingredients and the portion size. You will need to factor in the cost of the ingredients, but overall, it will be cheaper than buying commercial dog food.
Of course, not many people have time to do this, and having it ready-made in a tin or pouch makes it very simple.
How to Choose a Dog Food
There are many options when choosing food for your dog. However, not all dog foods are created equal. Selecting a food that is nutritionally balanced and appropriate for your dog’s breed and life stage is crucial. For example, puppies need a different balance of nutrients than adult dogs.
While choosing the cheapest option is tempting, be aware that cheaper foods may be lower in quality and may not provide the nutrition your dog needs. In general, you get what you pay for when it comes to pet food. Talk to your veterinarian about the best food options for your dog, and don’t be afraid to spend a little extra on quality nutrition.

Dog Food Subscription Trial Boxes
Very fussy Jack-Chi, does have a sensitive stomach, would quite like to be hand-fed every day, more interested in tennis balls than eating, likes flavours one day, turns his nose up the next!
We are slowly getting through all the subscription dog food boxes here in the UK, so I thought I would document the pros and cons of each one.
How to Use:
Usually, the boxes come with a 2-week trial. It is very easy to forget you have to change or pause, and before you know it, you have been charged, a whole new box is on its way, and you are not even sure your dog is really into it!
When your first box arrives, pause all other boxes. This allows time to slowly introduce the new food and see what flavours your dog likes, keeping any digestion issues to a minimum. This way, you can trial it all in your own time and see if the food is suitable for your dog.
Tails.com
It originally started as a premium dry food, but the bonus of creating food for your dog’s weight and needs. It used only to offer 300g wet food trays, so it wasn’t suitable for smaller dogs, but it has recently expanded with 150g trays and many food options.
It is a great option, has excellent hooks and offers, and is healthy and delicious for your dog.
Grab a free month of dry dog food kibble and 50% off wet food and treats
Pros
- Healthy options for your dog
- They create a recipe to suit your dog’s digestive needs
- You can make changes every month
- Good selections of food
- Invite friends for future discounts
- You can delay or pause at any time
Cons
- You can’t just order the wet food; it has to be accompanied by the dry kibble.
- The dry/wet mix seems a bit off. They recommended way more dry food than my dog would like/want, so it was challenging to change the ratio.
- If I fed my dog what they suggested, he would be overweight. It could just be mine, but he doesn’t eat that much food.
Butternut Box
High-quality ingredients are gently cooked at 90 degrees and quickly frozen, locking in freshness without having to use any nasty preservatives. They are different as they only deliver wet food frozen.
They have many recipe options so you can pick and choose your dog’s favourite flavours.
Pros
- Excellent range of flavours
- It looks like high-quality meat
- It has a small selection of stomach/digestion flavours
- Frozen means they are really fresh. You can even warm them up if your dog likes them and they have a pleasant aroma (I swear my dog eats better than me!)
- It has vegan and veggie options (my dog hated them!)
- They sent a lovely postcard of my dog, a nice touch.
Cons
- They are delivered in a special box as they are frozen; it feels a bit wasteful on the packaging side; you can reuse and recycle, but it is a lot.
- There aren’t any gravy options, and they are very high in meat. My dog likes gravy options, so he did get a bit bored.
- No dry kibble options

Purepetfood
Freeze-dried food. They chop and gently remove the moisture from our ingredients to naturally preserve them and lock in their nutritional goodness.
Unlike anything I have given my dog before, you mix water, which turns into food. It seems odd, but my dog ate it and is very fussy.
Pros
- Great quality ingredients and no nasties
- Tailored recipes with lots of choices
Cons
- You can only try two recipes out on trial; it would have been nice to try out more
- it is dry dust, and then you add water. It doesn’t look quite as appetising in real life, but the dog does seem to like it
- They have a fussy dog recipe, but it doesn’t take long for my guy to get bored with it!
