Samoyed

Samoyed

The Samoyed was originally bred to hunt, haul sledges and herd reindeer in Siberia. They are known as the smiling dog.

They are friendly, gentle and devoted dogs; if you are looking for an active addition to your family or household, you may have found your perfect breed.

Working dogs need a lot of exercise and this guy is no different. They need plenty of exercise and playtime. They could make the perfect jogging partner, this is not a breed for couch potatoes, and you will need to be able to commit to long walks and endless games to keep them happy. This is not really a suitable apartment dog.

They are great all-round dogs. They love being with you and your family, being fantastic and gentle with children of all ages. They do have a tendency to bond more with one special person.

They love strangers, just friends they haven’t met yet! If you are looking for a good watchdog, you need to keep on looking. This breed will more likely lick them to death.

They should be fine with other dogs and cats if brought up with them. They are hunters, so the instinctive need to chase cats and small animals is probably too strong to control. Make sure your outside area is well enclosed so they can’t escape when giving chase.

They are quite intelligent dogs but a little stubborn. They should be fairly easy to train and work with. Try to keep training both interesting and fun for the best results and avoid being harsh with them. Identifying their motivation reward early will get you the best results, and it’s normally food. They do tend to have a high-pitched bark, so make sure you train them to be quiet on command otherwise, you may get complaints.

They have thick coats and are heavy shedders, especially during Spring and Autumn. You will need to brush them at least weekly to combat the hairs and the mats.

Samoyed Stats

A medium-sized white dog with a ‘smiling’ face, the Samoyed was brought out of Siberia at the end of the last century and the early part of this century to pull sledges on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. These valiant dogs endured terrible hardships serving man in his quest for the Poles, with only a few returning.
