Frenchie’s

The French Bulldog has a unique appeal, bred in England to be small Bulldogs and ratters. These days they make great companion dogs and are a trendy breed worldwide.

They are small, muscular, sweet, entertaining and easy-going dogs. If you are looking for a breed that loves to play as much as they love being a couch potato, you may have found your perfect dog.

Exercise

They require little exercise and would make a great flat/apartment dog.  They will still enjoy a short daily walk, especially if they have no garden to run around. They are pretty playful dogs, so they should adapt well to apartment living as long as they get plenty of playtimes. A bored dog will usually become a naughty dog, whether it be nuisance barking, chewing or digging. Try to ensure they are occupied with jobs, playtime or plenty of exercise to keep them out of trouble.

Loving

They love their families and are good with kids; however, they have their limits and probably best to avoid this breed if you have young children. Older kids, though, will spend hours running around the back garden with them. They are devoted to their families and hate to be left alone. They are likely to suffer from separation anxiety, so do not get this dog if you work full time.

Strangers

They are OK watchdogs will usually alert you to suspicious activities but aren’t known to be excessive barkers. They are a bit un-trusting of strangers, so make sure you socialise with them early to avoid this. They are very protective of their families and will defend you if needed.

Health

As with most short muzzles dogs, they suffer from the heat and are prone to heat exhaustion. Make sure you keep an eye on them during hot conditions. They also cannot swim because of their build, so anyone with ponds or pools needs to be wary.

Other Animals

They should be fine with other dogs and cats if brought up with them. They may react to strange dogs and dogs of the same sex. They will usually chase the neighbourhood cats for a bit of fun.

Training

They are pretty intelligent dogs but a little stubborn,  but they should be reasonably easy to train and work with. Try to keep training both exciting and fun for the best results and avoid being harsh with them. Identifying their motivation reward early will get you the best results, and it’s normally food. They can be slow to house-train.

Grooming

Their hair is low maintenance, it’s short, and they shed moderately all year round, and they tend to shed worse during autumn and spring as they change their coats. Weekly brushing will be enough to keep it under control. As with most short muzzle breeds, they can have health problems and get used to snorting, snoring and farting!

French Bulldog Stats

Nothing is quite sure about the origin of this small bulldog. The French claim them as a national breed. The English consider them to be a descendant of the British Bulldog. The latter landed in France in the 1850s with Lace makers from Nottingham, who crossed Normandy, taking small bulldogs with them.
