The English Springer Spaniel, the name says it all. This guy will spring into action at a moment’s notice. They are a lively and active breed, originally bred as a sporting dogs.

They are a bright and enthusiastic breed. If you are looking for a dog to be active with, a running companion, and a great family pet, you may have found your perfect breed.

Working dogs need a lot of exercise and this guy is no different. They need plenty of exercise and playtime. They could make the perfect jogging partner, this is not a breed for couch potatoes, and you will need to be able to commit to long walks and endless games to keep them happy. This is not a suitable apartment dog.

A bored dog will usually become a naughty dog, whether it be nuisance barking, chewing or digging. Try to ensure they are occupied with jobs, playtime or plenty of exercise to keep them out of trouble.

They love to be with you and the family. They are fantastic with children. They are very ‘springy’ when they are young and have boundless energy. They will run around with kids all day in the garden. They do not cope well with being left alone and are prone to suffering from separation anxiety. They are not dogs for people who work full time.

They make excellent watchdogs, and you will always know who is at the door and anything suspicious or exciting outside. They can be a little un-trusting of strangers and, as with most dogs, will need good socialisation to combat this.

They are usually dog friendly and will want to run around and play with other dogs. Small animals and cats should be fine if brought up in the same household. Any animals outside will probably get chased as the hunting instinct will typically kick in.

They are very intelligent and easy to train. Try to keep training both exciting and fun for the best results and avoid being harsh with them. Identifying their motivation reward early will get you the best results and it’s normally food.

They have medium-length silky coats which require weekly brushing.  They shed moderately throughout the year, more in spring and autumn. You may want to get them clipped by a professional for a trim, or you can learn to do it yourself.
