English Setter
The English Setter is a gun dog bred to hunt quails in England. They are active, energetic and devoted dogs.
If you are looking for an active breed, a new running companion, or entering agility classes, this sweet-natured sociable dog could be the perfect breed for you.
Working dogs need a lot of exercise and this guy is no different. They need plenty of walks and playtime. They could make the perfect jogging partner, which is not a breed for couch potatoes. You will need to be able to commit to long hikes and endless games to keep them happy. This is not a suitable flat/apartment dog.
They are totally devoted to their family. They have boundless energy but are fantastic and gentle with children. You will find it challenging to find a breed that is as loyal and loving. They hate being left on their own and can suffer from separation anxiety. Don’t get this breed if you work full time or are not around much.
They pretty much love everybody, including strangers; if you are looking for a good watchdog, you had better look past this breed. They will alert you to people at the door and dangers outside, but they will more likely lick people to death.
They live peacefully, generally run around, and love to run and play with other dogs. Cats and other small animals brought up in the house should also be OK. Small animals and neighbourhood cats outside the house will likely still be chased.
They are very intelligent and relatively easy to train. They do know their minds, so to get the best results, it’s vital to discover what their treat motivation is early on. They are sensitive dogs, so do not train harshly or forcefully; they will sulk or hide from you and keep training playful and fun. English Setters have great memories, which is great for training but also difficult to break bad habits.
They have medium-length hair. They shed moderately throughout the year and more in spring in autumn. Regular or at least weekly brushing will keep the shedding under control. They make require a trip to a professional for a trim, or it is something you could do yourself if you wanted to.

English Setters are gun dogs. The breed was known in England in Elizabethan times, although the modern English Setter was developed only during the last century. Used by hunters to locate upland game such as quail and partridge, the breed is enthusiastic at work and has a keen game sense. In the field, it ranges out from the hunter and, on locating game, drops before it in a crouch. This instinct is still strong in lines bred both for the show ring and as companions.
