Douge-de-bordeux

The Dogue de Bordeaux is a large, powerful dog breed, made famous for being the star in the film Turner and Hooch.

They are gentle, loving giants, calm and chilled-out dogs but can be pretty athletic when asked to. They are used in many sports and activities and are therapy dogs. They make great companions if you have room for them.

They need a good amount of exercise and at least one good daily walk, and plenty of games to keep them active. This breed is prone to putting on weight so, you need to make sure they are getting enough exercise. A bored dog will usually become a mischievous dog, whether it be nuisance barking, chewing or digging. Try to make sure they are occupied with jobs, playtime or plenty of exercise to keep them out of trouble.

Douge’s love to be part of the family and are very affectionate, they are gentle with children, however, you may need to watch them around small children, due to their size.

They are very un-trusting of strangers, you will need to make sure you give them plenty of opportunities to socialise, to combat this. They are very territorial and protective of their family and make brilliant guard dogs, protecting you to the bitter end.

This is a breed best kept on its own due to its size, and fighting could lead to serious injury. They can be known to be dominant with other dogs and animals.

They are relatively intelligent but a little challenging to train. These are large powerful dogs, you will need to establish yourself as the top dog early on, and then you will have a lovely well-trained companion for life. Try to keep training both exciting and fun for the best results and avoid being harsh with them. Identifying their motivation reward early will get you the best results, and it’s normally food.

Their coats are short and very low maintenance. Shedding is moderate all year round, a little more around spring and autumn. The biggest problem is drooling, they drool a lot! Make sure you have an old towel around with these guys.
