The Dalmatian is probably one of the most well-known breeds in the world, those spots and the Disney film 101 Dalmations have made this breed a worldwide hit.

They are loving, dependable and affectionate, and if you are looking for a dog for agility classes or a running companion, this could be the breed for you.

They were originally bred as working dogs to run along carriages. This means they need a lot of activity. This is not a breed for couch potatoes. You will need to be able to commit to long walks and endless games to keep them happy.  A bored dog will usually become a naughty dog, whether it be nuisance barking, chewing or digging. Try to ensure they are occupied with jobs, playtime or plenty of exercise to keep them out of trouble.

They are playful and affectionate family pets. They are unsuitable for families with young children as they have their limits to being pulled around. Older children and those used to being around dogs will run around the garden playing endless games with them.

They are OK watchdogs that will usually alert you to suspicious activities but aren’t known to be excessive barkers. They are a bit un-trusting of strangers, so make sure you socialise with them early to avoid this.

They should be fine with other dogs and cats if brought up with them. They may react to strange dogs and those of the same sex. They will usually chase the neighbourhood cats for a bit of fun. They are known for being fantastic with horses.

They are intelligent and relatively easy to train. They do know their minds, so it’s crucial to discover what their treat motivation is early on to get the best results. They are sensitive dogs, so do not train harshly or forcefully; they will sulk or hide from you and keep training playful and fun.

They have short, smooth hair, but they constantly shed a lot. You will want to brush them at least weekly to combat the problem.

They have problems with urinary stones, so it’s essential to make sure they go out to the toilet regularly. They are also prone to deafness. Make sure this is checked before you adopt or buy one.
