Chow Chow
The Chow Chow is a very unique-looking, almost lion-like breed. They are proud and independent. They are not a cuddly breed, but if you are looking for a dog that will care for itself, this could be the breed for you.
The Chow Chow has a beautiful mane and originated in China, they are loyal and dependable, and if you are looking for a breed that doesn’t mind being left alone, this breed is happy to keep themselves occupied; they are similar to cats as they are independent, you might still get those puppy dog eyes when you leave though.
They are quiet and not really dogs that don’t really appreciate a fuss. They will be very loyal to one person and good with the rest of the family. They have limits to what they are prepared to put up with, so they are not recommended if you have young children.
They are very un-trusting of strangers; you will need to make sure you give them plenty of opportunities to socialise to combat this. They are very territorial and protective, making excellent watchdogs or guard dogs.
They don’t require much exercise other than a short daily walk. They are rarely very playful, so this is a very calm dog; they are a good choice for somebody looking for a low-maintenance companion.
They aren’t the most intelligent dog, but they will still respond well to consistent training; you will want to discover their reward motivation early to get the best results. They are independent and proud, so you will never want to treat them harshly or forcefully; you will never get good results from this breed if you choose harsh methods. They are known to be very clean, so house training has no problems.
They can be aggressive with other dogs, so they should be kept as an only pet. They have hunting instincts, so small animals and cats are a complete no-go with this breed. You may not be comfortable letting this breed off the lead unless they have a muzzle.
Chow Chows have distinctive black/blue tongues like bears! Their coats shed in the seasons, and it’s called blowing, they shed a little bit when they blow their coats, and it will literally fall out in clumps!
Chow Chow Dog Stats
This unique and fascinating dog is of Chinese origin and is steeped in oriental mystery. Chow Chows have retained their individuality and distinctive appearance since 150 BC, and early records show the Emperors used them as guard dogs and hunters. The Chow Chow as we know it first appeared in England in 1781, but it did not gain prominence until a century later. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of this medium-sized dog is its blue-black tongue – a feature it shares with the bear.
