American Foxhound
American Foxhounds are sweet, easy-going and loyal. They come from a hunting background, so they love running and would make for a great jogging or trekking partner. They are kind and make great family dogs, but they must get enough exercise to keep them out of trouble.
Foxhounds are pack animals and enjoy running around and the company of other dogs. They can be kept as a dog on their own as long as you can commit to their exercise requirements. They are hunters, so other small animals may be too tempting not to chase, and neighbourhood cats had better watch out.
They make great watchdogs, alerting you to any dangers approaching. They love to bark, and their howls are often described as musical, so if you live in a small neighbourhood, you might want to consider a different breed.
They make great family pets, they are mild-mannered, playful and gentle around children.
Training is essential as their instinct is to chase scents. It may be difficult to call them back once they have started to ‘hunt’. They are a bit stubborn, but good solid training will really help them to be wonderful dogs.
Foxhounds have short hair but shed moderately; brushing will help control this. Their coats don’t require clipping or any special attention.
