Airedale-Terrier

The Airedale terrier is one of the largest terriers, headstrong, playful and athletic. They are intelligent, so they need plenty of stimulation and exercise.

They enjoy a working life and love a job. They need lots of exercise to be the perfect running companion or join an agility class. They are great with kids, and their playful terrier side will be seen at its best.

Airedales take their time to grow up and stay puppy-like for longer than other breeds, which is either annoying or adorable – you decide! They are intelligent and headstrong, so this combination can cause trouble if not well trained or stimulated. They will hold a grudge if they are harshly treated, and as a terrier, they will likely chase the neighbourhood cats.

They make great watchdogs and will protect the family. They are friendly to strangers once they are in the home, though.

Airedale Terriers have a hardy, wiry outer coat and a shorter undercoat of soft hair. They need a good brush once a week and must be clipped twice a year as they don’t constantly shed like other breeds.

Airedale Stats

Airedales were used to deliver messages, carry mail and find wounded soldiers. One named Jack ran through half a mile of enemy fire, arrived with his message intact, and died of his injuries immediately upon delivering it.
